Canopies and Pergolas: Permanent Shade Structures Built for Wisconsin

A retractable awning gives you flexibility. A canopy gives you permanence. If you want a fixed shade structure that handles Wisconsin snow loads, wind, and UV without flinching — one you never have to retract, crank, or think about — an aluminum canopy or pergola cover is the way to go.

M2 Decks & Enclosures installs Betterliving canopies and pergola shade structures across 14 counties in southeast and south-central Wisconsin. From Mukwonago to Madison, Kenosha to Fond du Lac, we design and build shade solutions that are engineered for our climate.

Sizing and Frame Options

Betterliving canopies span from 3 feet 1 inch to 22 feet 6 inches wide, with projections from 3 feet 1 inch to 18 feet. That range covers everything from a small entry canopy to a full patio cover.

Standard frame colors are White, Black, and Earthstone. The aluminum construction means zero rot, zero rust, and minimal maintenance — you’re not repainting this thing every few years like a wood pergola.

Canopy vs. Pergola: What’s the Difference?

A white aluminum pergola with traditional open rafters and an integrated retractable striped fabric shade, installed on a deck with white railings.

A traditional pergola has open rafters. It looks great but provides inconsistent shade — you get stripes of light and shadow that shift throughout the day, and when it rains, you get wet.

A Betterliving canopy or pergola cover system solves both problems. You get a solid or louvered roof that provides consistent shade and weather protection. Pair it with retractable screens on the sides and you’ve created a semi-enclosed outdoor room.

If you want a space to entertain from spring through fall, go 3-season. If you want a true addition — a home office, a dining room, a year-round living space — go 4-season.

Why Aluminum Beats Wood

Wisconsin is hard on outdoor structures. Wood pergolas look great the day they’re installed. Give them three winters — with freeze-thaw cycles, ice, heavy snow, and spring moisture — and they start showing their age. Posts check and split. Beams warp. Paint peels. You end up on a ladder with a sander and a can of stain every other year.

Aluminum doesn’t do any of that. The Betterliving frames are powder-coated, corrosion-resistant, and structurally rated for local snow loads. They look the same in year ten as they did in year one.

Common Applications

We build canopies and pergola covers for homeowners across Waukesha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington, and every other county in our service area. Typical projects include:

  • Patio shade covers over outdoor dining and seating areas
  • Entry canopies for front doors and side entrances
  • Deck covers that protect outdoor furniture and grills
  • Pool area shade structures in Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, and Lake Country
  • Commercial applications for restaurants, cafés, and storefronts

These structures also provide a framework for additional products. Add solar shades for adjustable sun control. Add retractable screens for bug protection. Or pair with horizontal shades for a layered approach. The canopy is the foundation — the accessories dial in the experience.
