Advanced PVC vs. Composite Decking

Advanced PVC vs. Composite Decking: A Southeastern Wisconsin Homeowner’s Guide

Almost every deck conversation we have in Waukesha, Washington, Walworth, Milwaukee, and Racine County arrives at the same fork in the road: Advanced PVC or capped composite?

Both are dramatic upgrades over pressure-treated pine. Neither one needs sanding, staining, or sealing. Both are made in the USA by TimberTech and backed by warranties measured in decades rather than seasons. The real question isn’t which material is “better” — it’s which one is better matched to how your deck gets used, where it sits on your lot, and what you want to spend.

Here’s how we help homeowners think it through.

The Short Answer

Choose TimberTech Advanced PVC if your deck bakes in full afternoon sun, you go barefoot or have dogs, you want curves or mixed board widths, you’re building over a walk-out or second story, or you simply want the longest warranty TimberTech writes.

Choose TimberTech Capped Composite if you want an authentic, dimensional hardwood look with real board-to-board color variation at a friendlier price point, your deck is partially shaded, and a 25- or 30-year warranty comfortably outlasts how long you plan to be in the house.

There is no wrong answer here. There are only trade-offs — and the rest of this page is about making them plain.

What Southeastern Wisconsin Actually Does to a Deck

National decking comparisons are written for a climate none of us live in. Here’s what matters between Lake Geneva and Port Washington.

Freeze-Thaw Cycling

Our region doesn’t just get cold — it gets cold, thaws, and refreezes, over and over, from November through April. Any material that absorbs meltwater and then freezes it is fighting expansion from the inside.

Advanced PVC contains no organic wood flour at all, so there is nothing in the board for meltwater to soak into. Capped composite handles the same cycling well because the polymer cap is the water barrier — which is exactly why we specify four-sided capped collections (Legacy, Reserve, Terrain+, Terrain) for most Wisconsin projects. On a four-sided board, even the fastener grooves are sealed.

Ice Melt and Snow Removal

Both materials tolerate winter maintenance far better than wood, but the rules are the same for both: plastic shovel, no metal blades, and a non-corrosive, calcium-chloride-based ice melt. Rock salt and blended de-icers meant for concrete are the most common cause of avoidable surface damage we see on otherwise perfect decks.

Snow Load and Structure

Neither surface material carries the load — the frame does. Wisconsin snow loads are the reason we frame with kiln-dried 2×12 lumber and set structures on helical piers driven below frost depth. See Superior Building Methods for how we build underneath the boards.

Sun Exposure and Heat

A south- or west-facing deck in Muskego or New Berlin sees serious July sun. Advanced PVC’s Cool Touch technology is a genuine advantage here — but color is the bigger lever. A light Coastline or Slate Gray will always be more comfortable than a dark English Walnut in the same material.

Humidity, Shade, and Organic Growth

Lots that back up to woods or sit low near the Root, Fox, or Milwaukee River watersheds hold humidity. Pollen, leaf tannins, and shade-driven surface mold are the real enemies of a deck around here — not the material itself. Capped composite carries Mold Guard Technology in the board core on every collection except Prime+, Prime, and Premier. Advanced PVC has no wood core for mold to feed on in the first place.

Warranty, Compared Honestly

Warranty length is the clearest, least subjective difference between these two families.

Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our choice of partners; TimberTech is renowned for their high-quality, low-maintenance decking solutions that not only look stunning but are built to last.

A few things worth knowing about all of them: these are TimberTech/AZEK manufacturer warranties, coverage terms differ between residential and commercial installations, and colors may shift subtly over time as part of normal weathering consistent with the warranty. Proper installation is a condition of coverage — which is a large part of why we build the way we do. We’ll walk you through the current warranty documents during your estimate.

Where the Money Actually Goes

Homeowners are often surprised that the decking boards are not the largest line on a deck estimate. Framing, footings, railing, stairs, and permitting typically account for more than the surface material.

That has a practical implication: the jump from capped composite to Advanced PVC is usually a smaller percentage of the total project than people expect. If you’re already investing that includes in a deck that includes helical piers, a picture-framed layout, and a wrapped-post railing system, upgrading the surface is often a modest step — and it’s the one decision you can’t easily change later.

Conversely, if the budget is genuinely fixed, we would rather build a composite deck on an uncompromised frame than a PVC deck on a frame we cut corners on. The substructure is what determines whether your deck is still flat and solid in year fifteen.

How We Help You Decide

During your in-home consultation, we walk your actual site — sun angle, drainage, soil, tree cover, how you plan to use the space — and bring real samples so you can see the boards in your own light instead of a showroom’s. We’ll show you:

  • Advanced PVC and composite samples side by side, in your yard
  • What each material feels like underfoot in the sun
  • How multi-width or picture-framed layouts change the look
  • A line-item comparison of the same deck built both ways

Then you decide. No pressure, no upsell scripts.
Already have a deck? If the frame is sound, deck resurfacing puts either material on your existing structure for less than a full rebuild. And our project gallery shows both materials on real Southeastern Wisconsin homes.

Frequently Asked Questions

For decks in full sun, decks over living space, and homeowners planning to stay long-term, yes — the Limited Lifetime Product Warranty and the fact that there’s no wood fiber to absorb freeze-thaw moisture make a real difference over decades. For a shaded deck on a home you may sell in ten years, capped composite is excellent value.

Honestly, both are convincing now. Capped composite collections like Legacy (hand-scraped) and Reserve (reclaimed wood character) have deep, multitonal graining. Advanced PVC’s Vintage and Landmark Collections replicate exotic and crosscut hardwoods with wire-brushed and matte finishes. Come look at samples — this is a decision your eyes should make, not a spec sheet.

Any deck surface can be slippery with ice on it. TimberTech Advanced PVC offers up to 40% better traction than the competition, and both families use embossed, textured surfaces rather than smooth ones. For stairs and entries, we recommend integrated LED riser lighting and non-corrosive ice melt.

Yes, within reason. We commonly picture-frame a deck with a contrasting board and match fascia and riser boards to the field. What we don’t recommend is mixing PVC and composite in the same field — they expand at different rates and the fastening systems differ.

Both carry fade and stain warranties (50-year for Advanced PVC, 25 or 30 years for composite). Some subtle color change is part of normal weathering for any exterior material and is anticipated in the warranty language.

The boards will very likely outlast the warranty. The variable is what’s underneath them — which is why we frame with kiln-dried 2x12s, flash the joists, and set on helical piers rather than poured tubes that can shift with frost.

Yes. We design the deck, produce the drawings, and pull permits with your municipality — requirements vary meaningfully between Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine, Walworth, and Washington County jurisdictions.
