What “Capped Composite” Actually Means

Composite decking is a blend of recycled wood fiber and polymer. What separates a great composite board from a mediocre one is the cap — the protective polymer shell bonded to the outside of the board that does the real work of resisting moisture, staining, and UV.

TimberTech makes two grades of cap, and the difference matters a great deal in Wisconsin:

Four-sided cap

Legacy, Reserve, Terrain+, and Terrain Collections carry a proprietary polymer cap on all four sides, including inside the fastener grooves, made with zero wood fibers. Nothing about the board is exposed to weather. This is what we specify for the large majority of our projects.

Three-sided cap

Prime+, Prime, and Premier Collections are capped on three sides. They’re excellent, well-priced boards, and they’re the right call on budget-conscious projects and covered areas.

All TimberTech capped composite is made in the USA from approximately 85% recycled material — the most sustainable option in the lineup — and every collection except Prime+, Prime, and Premier includes Mold Guard Technology in the board core.

The TimberTech Composite Collections

Legacy Collection

Hand-Scraped Finish

The most artisanal composite TimberTech makes. A craftsman-inspired, textured hand-scraped surface with complex multitonal color that cascades through each board and a variable grain pattern, so board-to-board variation reads like real milled hardwood.

  • Colors: Whitewash Cedar®, Ashwood, Pecan, Tigerwood, Mocha, Espresso
  • Board size: 5.36″ wide, 0.94″ thick
  • Cap: Four-sided, including the grooves
  • Warranty: 30-Year Limited Fade & Stain + 30-Year Limited Product Warranty

Reserve Collection

Reclaimed Wood

Character-rich and rustic. The Reserve Collection captures the look of reclaimed timber with bold, multitonal colors and rustic cathedral graining — advanced color blending with a mix of vibrant hues that lands beautifully on farmhouse, craftsman, and lake-house architecture.

  • Colors: Reclaimed Chestnut™, Antique Leather®, Driftwood, Dark Roast®
  • Board size: 5.36″ wide, 0.94″ thick
  • Cap: Four-sided, including the grooves
  • Also available: Square-shouldered, WUI-Compliant boards by special order
  • Warranty: 30-Year Limited Fade & Stain + 30-Year Limited Product Warranty

Terrain+ Collection™

Subtle Wood Grain

Improved color-blending technology delivers sophisticated colors with a subtle grain pattern reminiscent of sanded white oak and walnut. A curated palette of low-gloss matte finishes that are designed to be used together in mixed-color patterns — a natural fit for picture-framed and multi-tone layouts.

  • Colors: Weathered Oak, Natural White Oak, Dark Oak
  • Board size: 5.36″ wide, 0.94″ thick
  • Cap: Four-sided, including the grooves
  • Warranty: 30-Year Limited Fade & Stain + 30-Year Limited Product Warranty

Terrain® Collection

Rugged Cathedral Grain

The workhorse. A rugged cathedral grain pattern with an embossed finish specifically designed to hide everyday wear and tear — patio furniture, dog nails, kids, grill traffic. Subtle color variation and a textured grain give it an authentic wood look without demanding careful treatment.

  • Colors: Silver Maple, Brown Oak
  • Board size: 5.36″ wide, 0.94″ thick
  • Cap: Four-sided, including the grooves
  • Warranty: 30-Year Limited Fade & Stain + 30-Year Limited Product Warranty

Prime+ Collection®

Timeless Wood Grain

A classic wood aesthetic with natural, inviting colors and a textured straight grain pattern. Moderately color-blended.

  • Colors: Dark Cocoa, Coconut Husk®, Sea Salt Gray
  • Board size: 5.36″ wide, 0.94″ thick
  • Cap: Three-sided, made with zero wood fibers
  • Warranty: 25-Year Limited Fade & Stain + 25-Year Limited Product Warranty

Prime & Premier Collections

Painted Wood

An opaque, stained-or-painted wood look with vivid, solid wood-stain colors and a subtle straight grain pattern in earthy tones. The Prime Collection uses a scalloped board profile for lighter weight without compromising a secure underfoot feel — a practical advantage on large second-story decks.

  • Colors: Maritime Gray, Dark Teak
  • Board size: Prime 5.36″ x 0.94″; Premier 5.36″ x 0.89″
  • Cap: Three-sided, made with zero wood fibers
  • Warranty: 25-Year Limited Fade & Stain + 25-Year Limited Product Warranty

A few notes we’d rather you hear from us than discover later: coverage terms differ between residential and commercial installations; some color change over time is part of normal weathering and is anticipated in the warranty language; and proper installation is a condition of coverage. We follow TimberTech’s fastening, spacing, and substructure specifications on every project, register your warranty, and give you the documentation at close-out.

Related coverage on the same project: TimberTech Railing carries a 25-Year Limited Warranty, TimberTech Lighting a 5-Year Limited Warranty, and TimberTech Aluminum Framing a Limited Lifetime Warranty on beams, joists, and posts.

Choosing a Composite Color for a Wisconsin Deck

A few things we’ve learned building in Southeastern Wisconsin that a color chip won’t tell you:

Full-sun decks want lighter colors. Every decking product warms in direct sun and darker boards run hotter. On a west-facing deck in Brookfield or a lakefront in Racine, Silver Maple, Whitewash Cedar, Sea Salt Gray, or Natural White Oak will be noticeably more comfortable in August than Espresso or Dark Roast.

Wooded and shaded lots want texture. Pollen, leaf tannins, and shade-driven surface film show most on flat, uniform surfaces. The embossed grain of Terrain or the hand-scraped Legacy hides seasonal grime between washings.

Heavy-use decks want Terrain. If you have dogs, kids, or you drag a grill and furniture around, Terrain’s embossed cathedral grain was engineered specifically to disguise that wear.

Multi-tone layouts want Terrain+. The Terrain+ palette is designed to be mixed — a darker picture frame around a lighter field is a striking, low-cost design upgrade.

We bring physical samples to your home so you can see them against your siding, your roof, and your light — not a showroom’s fluorescents.

The Frame Matters More Than the Boards

A 30-year composite deck surface fastened to a frame that sags, twists, or heaves is a 30-year board on a 12-year deck. That’s why every M2 composite deck includes:

  • Kiln-dried 2×12 framing instead of wet, crowned 2×8 or 2×10 lumber
  • PRO-Tac™ flashing and joist tape protecting the top of every framing member from water intrusion
  • Helical pier footings driven below frost depth rather than poured tubes that can shift with frost heave
  • Breaker boards instead of butt-joint splices on long runs
  • Picture-framed borders as standard, with matching fascia
  • LP SmartSide or MiraTec-wrapped support posts rather than bare green-treated timber
  • Optional TimberTech Aluminum Framing for a rust-proof, rot-proof, Class A fire-rated substructure

Building over a walk-out or patio? Add under-deck drainage to turn the space below into a dry, usable room. Replacing boards on a sound frame? See deck resurfacing.

Composite or Advanced PVC?

Capped composite gives you an authentic hardwood look, the highest recycled content in the line, and 25 to 30 years of warranty coverage at a friendlier price. Advanced PVC gives you zero wood fiber, Cool Touch technology, curved and multi-width design freedom, and a Limited Lifetime Product Warranty.

And once the surface is settled, plan the railing, lighting, and finishing touches — those decisions have to be made before the frame goes up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Composite decking is designed to resist moisture, cracking, and warping during Wisconsin’s freeze-thaw cycles. We recommend using a plastic shovel for snow removal and non-corrosive ice melt for added traction in icy conditions.

TimberTech composite decking features UV-resistant color technology that protects against fading, even under direct sunlight. Your deck will retain its vibrant appearance for years with minimal color change.

Absolutely! M2 Decks & Enclosures offers a wide range of TimberTech composite decking colors, board patterns, railing styles, and lighting options. Every deck is custom-designed to complement your home’s exterior and your personal style.

Not at all! A simple cleaning with soap, water, and a soft brush a few times per year is all it takes. No sanding, staining, or sealing—just easy upkeep and long-lasting beauty.

Yes! M2 Decks & Enclosures offers full-service deck design, permitting, and installation. We handle all local building codes and ensure your new deck meets or exceeds Southeastern Wisconsin requirements.

High-quality composite decks, like those built with TimberTech materials, can last 25–50 years with minimal maintenance. Unlike wood, they won’t rot, warp, or crack—making them ideal for Wisconsin’s changing seasons.

Composite decking is made from a blend of recycled wood fibers and plastics, providing the natural look of wood with added durability and low maintenance. It doesn’t require annual staining or sealing, and it’s resistant to insects, mold, and fading—unlike traditional wood.

As a TimberTech Platinum Installer serving Lake Country, WI & the surrounding area in Southeastern WI, M2 Decks & Enclosures brings expert craftsmanship, premium materials, and personalized service to every project. We’re dedicated to building decks that last, and look beautiful for decades. We will also secure you an extended warranty on everything we install!

A four-sided cap seals the board on every surface, including inside the fastener grooves. A three-sided cap leaves the bottom uncapped. TimberTech’s Legacy, Reserve, Terrain+, and Terrain Collections are four-sided; Prime+, Prime, and Premier are three-sided. For most Wisconsin decks — especially ground-level and shaded ones — we recommend a four-sided capped collection.

It’s mold-inhibiting protection built into the composite board core. It’s included on every TimberTech capped composite collection except Prime+, Prime, and Premier. Combined with a four-sided cap, it’s the reason capped composite handles shaded, humid Wisconsin lots so much better than uncapped composite or wood.

Approximately 85% — the highest recycled content in the TimberTech lineup, and meaningfully more sustainable than harvesting new lumber. It’s made in the USA.

Terrain. Its rugged, embossed cathedral grain was designed specifically to hide everyday wear and tear. Legacy’s hand-scraped texture is a close second.

Yes, and we encourage it. A contrasting picture frame is the single most effective design upgrade on a composite deck. The Terrain+ palette in particular is built for mixed-color patterns.
